Henry Raphael was born in San Francisco on 14 November, 1889, the same year that his family arrived in the city. In 1910 he worked as a deck officer aboard the US Coast and Geodetic Survey vessel USS Patterson, en route from Seattle to Alaska. He later earned a PhD in history at UC Berkeley, and taught mathematics, chemistry and astronomy at Galileo High School, San Francisco. From the description of Henry Raphael papers, 1910.
